If adrenaline-pumping action is your style then heading over to Owens River Gorge on February 28 is a good idea. The Gorge is a destination spot for rock climbing enthusiasts that come from all corners of the world just to scale up the vertical inclines of the canyon. The area is also a favorite for fly and lure fishing. Members of the Mountain Ascent Association will be hosting an event for all levels of rock climbers who are looking for challenges and fun!

While everyone is welcome to come out, you must be a Base or Apex member to register. Whether you’re a seasoned climber or just getting started, MMA members will be on hand to offer tips and their expertise. There are approximately 500 routes (with varying degrees of difficulty) in the area to try out, so there will be something to suit every climber.

There are 10 available spots for keen and enthusiastic climbers to join this free rock climbing event. All participants are required to bring their own climbing gear. Supplies needed include rock shoes, belay device, helmet, harness, PAS, locking carabiners, tent, pack, approach shoes, slings, food & water, jacket, sleeping bag, pad, and personal equipment.

Participants will meet at the Central Gorge parking lot at 9 am on February 28. From there, everyone will go to the Warm-Up Wall and the Great Wall of China. Afterward, climbers will move on to other areas for the remainder of the afternoon. Camping sites will likely be set up at Sagebrush or BLM Climber’s Campground. On February 29 participants will break camp and then make their way back to the Gorge for another day of climbing.

Safety is a top priority at this event. It’s important to note that the event leaders are experienced climbers, but may not be certified guides. Leaders will carry a medical kit and communication devices. The primary event leader will have current training in wilderness first aid, CPR training, and MAA policy.
